Having landed at CDS Towers early in February 2016, this is the 1st of three volumes of an officially endorsed 2016 re-release of the now hard to find: ‘Dark Side Of The Moog’ series of collaborative albums produced for the Fax label in the 1990’s and beyond by Schulze & Namlook. This attractive box includes a disc of Bonus Material!

The ‘Dark Side Of The Moog: Volumes 1-4’ Boxed Set contains 5 Discs (4 Original Albums and a Bonus 12-Track CD) in Jewel Cases all packaged in a Presentation Card Box with a Pull-Off Lid.
With the exception of ‘DSOTM - Vol. 1’, which contains a 12 Page Full-Colour Booklet with Liner Notes, each ‘DSOTM’ case contains a 4-Page Full-Colour Booklet that initially look like they have the same image on each one, but look closer and you’ll discover that the Cover-Art on each volume cleverly features a background image of Planet Earth that is on a on a slightly different gradient to the moon in the foreground, moving clockwise with each volume – a really neat idea that will obviously be carried through the entire series!
The Bonus Disc also has a 4-Page Booklet, but with a totally different theme on the cover art!

Klaus Schulze and the late Pete Namlook made Eleven ‘Dark Side Of The Moog’ albums together throughout the 90’s and into the new millennium for Fax Records, a now defunct “Experimental Electronic Ambient” music label founded and owned by Peter Namlook. Most releases were restricted to relatively small and limited quantities, and as such much of its catalogue of releases has now become highly collectable!

During the naughties, Fax off-shoot label: Ambient World re-issued several Fax tiles. These included most of the ‘DSOTM’ series, but these were not around for long and have also now become quite thin on the ground.

The ‘Dark Side Of The Moog’ title was a play on PINK FLOYD’s massive album title, as were the track titles on each album, and while the music bore no resemblance to FLOYD’s what so ever, the track titles quite cleverly gave the music notoriety in places where it might have been missed altogether.

Musically these recordings really have stood the test of time! They contain fantastic electronic music that can be thoroughly appreciated by not only the army of Schulze fans and “Berlin Scholars” in general, but those into the more modern sounds and beats of the “Ambient” 90’s era as well – This really was a winning combination all round!

With regard to the mastering of these new ‘DSOTM’ reissues – it is exactly the same as the original FAX releases - by Pete Namlook himself – as the new label felt it couldn't be done any better. This is admirable given that they could have so easily described them as “remasters” just to draw in those who perhaps thought they were going to sound better (maybe they do anyway?), but the fact is they didn’t need to do that, because of the way the box has been assembled and presented – this is an extremely desirable package for the price, and it really does sell itself!

So now you can preserve your original Fax collector's items and listen to these new reissues instead, plus there’s that CD of Bonus Material to savour as well!
