about

Sides C & D:

The title track is hard to pin down, but there's definitely something happening. We're by the sea, but the atmosphere is weirdly jaunty. I can't get a hold of anything *specific* but it's a calming and inviting opening to the album. As usual with Neil, the production isn't obvious, but is subtle and wonderfully shrewd. At the track's close, the bass rumbles as it struggles to a halt, only for it to be picked up sharper and louder in the next track - the glorious "Add to Subtract". We're moving a bit closer to 'Hot Pots' territory here as the synths try to dig for victory while Neil makes them run around the prison yard for an hour. It's classic Correlations and I'm here for it.

Track three and the last track on Side one is "Go Go'. Again, the production here is everything. Filmic and expansive. Ascendent and subtly epic. Some echoes of the soundtrack work of Blanck Mass, perhaps.

Side D opens with "Hive Mind", an extravagant piece with some adventurous mixing playfully spinning circles within circles. "Never Ending Love" is back to that instantly identifiable Correlations sound. Rich with tiny detail and shimmering like a heat haze. It's a beautifully optimistic and immersive experience.

The album closes with the longest track and centerpiece of the album, "Subtropic". Neil gives us everything here. A throbbing bass note emerges from a tooled-up tape delay effect. The synths take up the call and a melancholic circular loop builds and falters. It's the sort of music that when you play it on headphones outdoors, you feel like you're in the movie. The instrumentation is pretty minimal, but the depth is extraordinary. When it ends, it's hard not to play it again.

More Correlations coming next year.

The vinyl will start to ship in January.
The three remaining (late) albums for 2022 will not count towards the 2023 baseline 9 records commitment from the Head Librarian.
