The Psychic Circle Returns With ‘Seven Colours Of The Psychic Circle’, Out September 3rd; Listen To “Colore Della Morte”

Library of the Occult returns to the fold of forward-thinking psychedelic/horror/giallo music on September 3rd with the latest from The Psychic Circle called Seven Colours Of The Psychic Circle. Tom McDowell’s side/band project dives into Argento/Bava/Fulci territory with a 7-track LP that locks tight(like a gloved hand around a throat) into both Giallo sensibility while still giving us that woozy, hallucinatory psychedelia we know and love.

Last we heard from The Psychic Circle was on last year’s debut View From The Magicians Window. That album saw the proggy psych project deep diving into mystical realms while laying down some serious acid-fried 60s/70s psych, with just the right amount of progressive tendencies. With Seven Colours Of The Psychic Circle the band mixes in plenty of baroque melancholy to go with their brand of fuzzed-out guitars and groove-heavy bass.

Two names that come to mind listening to this exquisite slab of wax are Adrian Younge and Psicomagia. Younge’s work on the Luke Cage soundtrack plays heavy here, mixing in Giallo elements with late 60s street soul. Equal parts groove, Gothic lore, and melancholy. The acid-burnt psych the band lays down here reminds me of the great So Cal voodoo/psych outfit Psicomagia. Their El Paraiso Records debut was filled with analog synth, mysticism, and pure psych jams. McDowell and The Psychic Circle give us a slice of Giallo grandeur with an absinthe chaser.

“Colore Della Morte” embodies the sonic trip here. Filled with Giallo melancholy and a groove-inflected rhythm, this track brings us into the world of The Psychic Circle. There’s elements of Rizzati, Frizzi, with Italian psych music of the late 60s. It’s a masterful entrance into Seven Colours Of The Psychic Circle, and one that hooks you at first listen.

The first soundtrack I bought when I first began collecting horror soundtracks was Rizzati’s House By The Cemetery. It was burnt into my psyche ever since I saw the film at 14-years old. Imagine that soundtrack morphing into Adrian Younge’s Luke Cage score, add some absinthe and an ancient Italian crypt and you’ve got The Psychic Circle’s Seven Colours Of The Psychic Circle.

Seven Colours Of The Psychic Circle’ drops on September 3rd via Library Of The Occult. It will be available on “Eyeball White” vinyl, limited to 300 first edition pressings. You will find it here. Listen to “Colore Della Morte” below.
