 Joseph D. Rowland (Pallbearer) has launched his solo project Hosianna Mantra alongside his debut full-length Particle Mythology, a darkly infectious retro-synth odyssey that’s equal parts Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. Across seven tracks, Rowland seamlessly shifts between hypnotic patterns and driving dark psychedelia that transports the listener into a cinematic alternative mental dimension. Hosianna Mantra sees Rowland channeling and building on legends like Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, and Kraftwerk, as well as modern greats such as Zombi and Daniel Lopatin. On Particle Mythology, he shifts his signature melodicism away from thunderous guitars and into dreamy and cinematic synthesizers taking sonic cues from the heyday of cosmic synth music from the 70s and 80s. Rowland has honed Hosianna Mantra over several years— first through improvised sets opening for heavy luminaries such as YOB, Spirit Adrift and Thou, then through his DJ sets around his home base of New York City featuring cuts from his personal collection of krautrock and Kosmische Musik vinyl. These live performances have methodically set the stage for Particle Mythology— his first full-length album as Hosianna Mantra. Rowland is best-known as the co-founder and bassist of the trailblazing and critically-lauded doom metal band Pallbearer that has reshaped the metal and hard rock landscape over its decade-long career. The group has received praise in outlets such as the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Rolling Stone, Spin, and NPR, has released music through prestigious labels such as Nuclear Blast, Sub Pop and Profound Lore, and has had music featured on Adult Swim as well as multiple feature-length films. Rowland has emerged as a songwriting force, known for his sense of melody and as the main creative mind behind many of Pallbearer’s most beloved songs including “Worlds Apart,” “The Ghost I Used to Be,” “An Offering of Grief,” “Lie of Survival” and “Ashes,” among others. Rowland’s classical training and multi-instrumental expertise is on display in his solo works as well. Performed and produced utilizing Rowland’s personal esoteric musical equipment collection amassed over his career, Rowland has meticulously crafted a collection of songs designed to displace the listener from drab reality into a colorful universe that feels both terrestrial and cosmic, human and robotic, ancient and futuristic.
