 One should usually approach techno albums with rainbow-tinted artwork and tracks titled "Serenity," "Joy," and "Fear" with extreme caution. Particularly with a sell-by date of 1994, meaning the whole thing was probably recorded in the afterglow of a week-long ecstasy binge. And there is no way to defend Emotional Travelogue of these charges. A sweet and trippy journey of ambient landscapes and lifting techno beats, even the tracks titled after the "bad" emotions -- "Anger," "Envy," "Lust" -- hardly contain a smirk, let alone a frown or a snarl. And the worst part about it is, this record is completely enjoyable. Those still angry at the failed promise of spiritual enlightenment through techno will bitterly scorn it. But if you are over placing such naïve pressures on your CD collection, than revisiting Peter Vriends can be like browsing through an old photo album -- gentle, melancholy, and not a bad way to escape for an hour. ~ Joshua Glazer, Rovi ''I'm not particularly in the know on electronica music but this album (an accidental find) is really swell. Vriends' music at first seems simplistic but his subtleties draw you in and carry you along. "Emotional Travelogue" is interesting enough to actually pay attention to while at the same time being a relaxing and energetic background. In your car it's the oddball soundtrack to your personal movie, at your party it's the electric backdrop for cocktails and conversation.
