Despite the tacky marketing gimmick behind Area 51: The Roswell Incident -- an attempt to cash in on the late-'90s UFO fad by releasing a compilation of electronic space-rock under a title that alludes to UFOs -- it's actually not a bad collection, hitting many of the genre's most seminal bands, as well as several newer ambient acts, over two budget-priced discs. Included are tracks by, among others, Tangerine Dream, Hawkwind, Gong, Amon Düül 2, Chrome, Kraftwelt, Kraftwerk's Yamo, and Can bassist Holger Czukay.
This 2 disc set of space-progressive-electronic music is highly recommended and worth the money. All songs are good, interesting works of the space music genre and include groups Hawkwind and Guru Guru from 1971, Amon Duul II from 1973 all the way up to Chrome, Gong and Kraftwelt from 1997. This set does not include any of the poorly recorded, live songs from bands that don't even play "space music" that are on some of the other compilations such as "Acid Space". (I'll review that one later.) This compilation also includes a booklet listing all the items available on Cleopatra, Purple Pyramid, and Hypnotic Records (and others). So if you like that acid-space music you will definitely enjoy these CD's!
