The music of Zombi is cinematic soundtrack music for the movies in your mind. Even if you don’t know Genesis from Tangerine Dream from Giorgio Moroder, you’ll still find something to enjoy in the duo’s spacey rocking instrumental compositions. Zombi is keyboardist / bassist Steve Moore and drummer Anthony Paterra. Moore’s meticulous analog and digital synthesizer loops and sequences take flight over Paterra’s grounded percussion, sometimes disco, sometimes kraut rock beats. The duo have a deep love of kitsch, the album cover of Escape Velocity shows the backside of a naked women jogging into the sky from a DeLorean car and you can find a picture of Michael Mann’s 80′s cop series Miami Vice with the duo’s faces pasted over those of the show’s neon clothed stars.
The title track opens the album with Paterra drumming a tribal pattern through Moore’s strident sequencing and sci-fi keyboards. Shrunken Heads is this album’s dance track, with a 4X4 beat holding down Moore’s loops as the keyboards drift and swirl around until floating off into the ether. DE3 continues the disco beats with bouncing synths coming up against hazy keyboards joined by Paterra’s muscular live drumming, creating a satisfying groove.
